Cold War Tension 4: The Korean War

The Korean War started in 1950 and ended in 1953. The Korean War seemed to be a war between South Korea and Northern Korea, but that was just a cover up for who it really was between. It was another war between the United States and the Soviet Union. It was a way for the superpowers to go into war without having a "hot war", or a war with a lot of action. The United States went into war for three reasons. One of them was the "Domino theory". The domino theory is the political theory that if one nation comes under communist control then neighboring nations will also come under communist control. The United States had this reason because China turned communist in 1949 and Truman was afraid that Japan was next. The second reason they went into war is because President Truman was afraid that communsim would win over capitalism. Thridly, Truman realized that the United States and the Soviet Union were in competition for total control of the world, or world domination. The Soviet Union went into war because they wanted to spread communsim world wide. However they wanted to do this without getting into a "hot war" with the United States. The United States and South Korea were allies, and the Soviet Union and North Korea were allies. The United States thought that by being surpportive of South Korea, they would be able to fight communism without attacking the Soviet Union. In 1949, Kim II Sung kept telling Stalin that he could attack and take over South Korea. Stalin was thinking that the United States probably wouldn't get involved so he agreed with Kim II Sung. Syngman Rhee from South Korea announced that he was going to attack North Korea because they attacked them. This was the starting point of the real fighting in the Korean War.
